Laufenburg is a picturesque medieval town, originally built in a forest area, which was divided by Napoleon more than 200 years ago and now consists of a Swiss and a German part. With exception of the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen, no other place has been depicted by famous artists as much as Laufenburg with its impressive rapids. These had to cede to power plants at the beginning of the past century – what remains is the charm of a romantic town with gates, towers, narrow winding streets and squares with old fountains, as well as the ruins of an old castle, which towers majestically over the manors and old houses of the old city. Laufenburg owes its singular situation to the Rhine, which – during the ice age -had to seek its way through a barrier of red rocks between the Schwarzwald and the Jura. Thus, at its most narrow point, a gorge with a breadth of only 12 metres was created with the famous rapids – the “Laufen”. less
