The word "apologetics" comes from the greek word found in Jude 3, "...that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." The word "contend" here translates from the greek into our modern day word usage of "apologetics." In other words, "apologetics" is not apologizing for something but rather it means to defend something, protect, wrestle, etc.; in this case to defend or fight for the truth of the Gospel message of Jesus Christ against false prophets as Jude 4 brings up immediately.
