Canon L-1---Hi-8 video---Fat Albert got off to a spectacular start and awed the crowd, with 4 big turboprops at full throttle and 8 JATO bottles burning. Someone must have been running a stopwatch, because the pilot leveled off just a second before the rockets burned out. When Albert stalled and dove in for a landing his wide belly gave so much ground-effect, that he stayed clear of the runway for some distance, despite having his nose pointing down. His variable-pitch props went into reverse and allowed him to back into a parking space and come out, heading the other direction. For a bulgy fellow, designed in the early 1950s, he is still the most versatile and utilitarian airplane around. less
