Araki spoke with FilmCatcher at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival about the original impetus behind his 1992 buddy-movie-gone-bad, the heady social and political context it harkens back to, and the ways in which his movies as a whole do and don't fit within the "queer cinema" rubric. THE LIVING END tells the story of Luke who is a rootless hustler who's determined to "live fast, die young, and make a beautiful corpse," while Jon is a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he's HIV positive. They meet by chance (or is it fate?), and when Luke kills a cop, they take to the road, embarking on a wild odyssey with a devastating end stage.
