The state Department of Labor says software jobs have been on the rise; 3,300 such positions were filled in 2007. These include publishers, applications engineers, systems software engineers and other specialists. These skilled positions pay well. Publishing jobs averaged $84,000 in 2007, and engineering jobs averaged $52,000. The statewide average wage was $33,500. Ninety-five percent of the software businesses in the Spud State have fewer than 20 employees. Idaho’s current unemployment rate is 4.6 percent, the 12th lowest in the U.S. as of August. less
