The Estonia's government decision to remove the Soviet war memorial and exhume the soldiers' remains have highlighted deep divisions in Estonian society. The weekend brought with it predictions of mass protests. But as Saturday evening drew on it became obvious that police tactics had paid off. Tallin was clear and the streets around the site of the monument empty of the many hundreds that had amassed here on Thursday and Friday. Still police weren’t taking any chances. A relatively quiet streets now, but on Friday this was a virtual frontline between protestors on one end police at the other. Nearly every shop window has been broken. Two nights of violence saw over 800 arrests, among them 100 youths under the age of 16. On Thursday one protestor was killed. However, in its latest report on Estonia the international human rights watchdog Amnesty International says the country's Russian-speaking minority has very limited rights. less
