寶寶出生後能生存，端賴於吸吮能力，就像演員必須要排練所飾演的角色，在出生前，就不斷練習吸吮手指，根據超音波照片的顯示，早在出生前的三個月，胎兒就會吸吮手指了。對胎兒來說，吸吮手指是一件很容易的事，因為柔軟的子宮壁讓他的手可以很輕鬆地放在嘴前。而在寶寶出生後四個月，就可以控制肌肉，只要他想把拇指於在嘴裡，他就可以做得到，這時又可以如沐春風般地吸吮自己的拇指。
