According to virtual workplace expert Debra Dinnocenzo, the traditional workplace is shrinking at a mind-boggling rate. As increasing numbers of us work from home, or work with others who are telecommuting, we face a whole new set of challenges. Dinnocenzo points out that building trust and communication is hampered when we're working from a distance. For one thing, we can't read the visual cues that enhance good communication. Also, without the social interaction provided by brief chats around the water-cooler or during coffee breaks and lunches, we don't have the opportunity to build the trust that's crucial to a good work relationship. "When we're dispersed, we often don't have the opportunity to get to know each other the way we do in the traditional workplace. We need to make a special effort to schedule time to develop relationships. Schedule face-to-face time to get to know each other at the beginning of a project, if at all possible." less
