James Kalm Reports on the U.S. museum premiere of Jim Shaw’s exhibition “The Donner Party” at P.S1. The main piece in this intriguing exhibition is the large scale installation which parodies Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party” now on permanent display at the Brooklyn Museum (check out the previous Kalm report: Judy Chicago”s “The Dinner Party”). Shaw’s artistic practice has simulated a fictional mythic cult of “Oism” which he uses to critique America’s history of native born religions. With an exquisite appreciation of the weird and naïve in American cultural kitsch, Shaw touches a nerve that is at once humorous, insightful and creepy. A unique statement on a side of American society guiltily rendered invisible by the cultural elites. less
